Dad at 9 years old |
Soldier in Europe |
While injured and recuperating in Wales, UK he met and married Elsie Williams, a black haired, brown eyed beauty from a small village named Hollybush. Together they had and raised 6 children. Married for 56 years their family multiplied. Fourteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren who all called him "Papa" came along over time. He was so proud of his family and at Christmas or other family gatherings, he would look at Mom and say about the 50+ family members present, "Elsie, this is all our fault!" and smile.

Dad at my office |
Working in a coal mines for years he decided to be a truck driver. He owned and operated his own small trucking company, where he was involved in building most of the interstate road system in Tennessee. After trucking, he owned and operated an insulation business. Upon retiring due to lung problems of both Black Lung and Emphysema, craft shows become a fun past time for Robert and Elsie. He made country wood crafts and children toys.
On March 1, 2001, Robert Jackson Dykes passed away. Never a day will pass that he will not be remembered for the caring of his family he did so unselfishly, knowledge he shared with all of us, and being one of the best role models a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild could have ever had.
This poem was written by a grandson in the sixth grade and was read at Dad's funeral service.
My Grandpa Soldier
Many Years ago in a faraway land
there was a fine man.
He fought in the war so we
would have peace evermore.
Today he grows older
My fine Grandpa Soldier,
but in my eyes he grows taller,
as our time gets smaller.
Each minute is a treasure
I will cherish forever.
The love I feel is so fine
for this Grandpa Soldier of mine.
